Relationshifts Series - Pt. 4 - "Friendshifts!"

Mar 8, 2026    Pastor Arthur J. James

This week's message explores the often-overlooked reality that our friendships, like all relationships, go through seasons of change and shift. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 and the wisdom literature of Proverbs, we're challenged to examine the health of our friendships through three critical signs. First, when proximity and practice shift—when people who once made time for us suddenly become distant or unavailable. Second, when loyalty leaks—when those we trusted begin to speak about us rather than to us, or when they celebrate with us only in good times but disappear during trials. Third, when love leaves—when jealousy, unforgiveness, or pride replace the genuine care that once characterized the relationship. The message beautifully illustrates these principles through the friendship between David and Jonathan, showing us what true loyalty looks like even when circumstances change. Jonathan loved David as his own soul, refusing to let his father's jealousy poison their bond. This teaching reminds us that healthy friendships require reciprocity, honesty, and the ability to both give and receive constructive criticism. Most importantly, we're reminded that while human friendships may shift and disappoint, we have a friend in Jesus who sticks closer than a brother—one whose love never fails, whose loyalty never wavers, and whose presence never leaves us.
