Relationshifts - Pt. 5 "Work Shifts!"

Mar 15, 2026    Pastor Arthur J. James

This week’s message tackles a reality many of us face but rarely discuss in church: the challenge of maintaining our Christian witness in toxic, shifting workplace environments. Drawing from Romans 12:16-21, we're reminded that our faith isn't just for Sunday mornings it's meant to sustain us through Monday morning meetings, difficult coworkers, and unexpected job changes. The message emphasizes three crucial truths: first, we must know our purpose for being at our workplace goes beyond a paycheck—we're ambassadors for Christ placed strategically to be salt and light. Second, we need to accept that challenge and change are inherent to any assignment God gives us, just as Jacob experienced working for the deceptive Laban who changed his wages ten times. Third, we must remember that no single workplace is the only place God can use us or provide for us. The message beautifully weaves together stories from Genesis through Joseph facing sexual harassment from Potiphar's wife, Jacob navigating a hostile work environment to show that workplace struggles are nothing new. What transforms these struggles is our response: choosing peace over retaliation, prayer over gossip, and trusting God's timing over our own understanding. When we spend significant portions of our waking hours at work, learning to walk in wisdom during these shifts becomes essential not just for our careers, but for our spiritual health and witness to a watching world.
